The paper summarises the support by billionaire Robert Mercer, part owner of Cambridge Analytica and the right wing Breitbart News Network, and the provision of services to Nigel Farage's Brexit campaign and Trump's USA presidential election campain.
During both campaign, extensive analysis of voters' social medial profiles and AI were used to target and influence them.
Mercer – and his daughter Rebekah – are emerging as key figures in the ascendancy of Trump and, as the Observer details today, the strategic disruption of the mainstream media

I the last two years in particular, there has been a significant amount of resources and effort provided or funded by a rich few in order to influence the outcome of elections or referendums in the USA and the UK. In particular these resources are being used to influence the decisions of individuals and disrupt the ability of the mainstream media to be the major influencer.
This trend is likely damaging to the democratic process.
