This article is about text analytics as big data and the insights which can be developed from analysing large volumens of unstructured data.
Business could and do collect a large volume of unstructured data in the form of social media and call center interactions with customers, emails, product reviews etc. Techniques to analyse structured data are many and varied, but unstructured data analysis is not so well provided for.
The author notes that the common rule of thumb is that unstructured data represents 80% of information available to an organisations, much of which isn't being used. A large portion of this unstructured data is text and text analytics to uncover context, emotions, sentiment etc is of growing importance.

The volume of unstructured data is very high and potentially largely untapped in organisations. Considering the absence of collection of unstructured data, regardless of whether it is being analysed, this data and analytics techniques present a large opportunity for enterprise.
