What was the paper about?
This article summarises a tried performed by Fujitsu using IoT technology (wireless pedometers) on cows, and a prediction system to predict when cows were in esterus (a short 12-18 hour window), are likely to be successfully artificially inseminated and when to inseminate them in order to improve the likelihood of male or female offspring.
Scientists determined that esterus could be predicted by counting the number of steps a cow took, as they the number of steps typically increased significantly during this period (orange line in the chart below)
Pedometers were fitted to a herd of cows, the number of steps transmitted to a Microsoft Azure DB where it was analysed, and the results sent to a farmers phone notifying them of the optimum times.
Over 11 farms, herd sizes increased between 12-31%.

Additionally, this paper is an excellent demonstration of using data analysis to uncover predictor variables which may otherwise not be found (e.g. the link between a cows steps and esterus) and how sensors and predictive algorithms designed to use the data produced, can be used to improve an outcome.
The volume, variety and velocity (big data) of data which is likely to be produced as sensors become increasingly affordable and prevalent is likely to continue to increase. Insights available from the data will add value in many ways but the amount of storage and processing power to facilitate this analysis will require cheaper, faster, better solutions, such as GPUs etc.
