If, like me, you have the unfortunate situation of running inside a windows focused corporate environment which has a strict internet access policy, and, like me you would rather run on a linux style environment so you can have a terminal etc, "sighs", there are a few hurdles to jump through.
Personally I like OSX but, on my windows based work computer, get by with Ubuntu 12.04 running in a VMware VM. I use to run it on virtual box but it started getting slow and unstable around the time of the last Ubuntu update. I switched to VMware and haven't gone back.
Getting popper internet access through a proxy from Ubuntu is a bit of a pain and I tend to follow the steps in this video to get it working. It means you have to update your password in the apt.conf file every time you change your windows password but hey, it works.
